About Me

Industrial Design

My name is Alex Coajou. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a B.F.A. in Industrial Design. I have a passion for both art and technology. I believe a balance between these things in function, design or the manufacturing process can push a product beyond convention and become transcendent, timeless, innovative, & practical. I love the process of fostering ideas into designs and developing them into reality. To me, sketching is not enough, prototyping and testing is also a critical part of the design process that allows a designer emerge from more abstract ideas on paper (the known) and to encounter, explore and foster innovative solutions to unforeseen challenges (the unknown.) This process of design, prototyping and iteration is an integral part of distilling a design into its most intuitive essence.

Prop Design

I have a love prop design & fabrication. Prop Design allows me to explore a new area of design beyond just the philosophical & practical aspects of the humanities and into drama. In my experience - Industrial Design and Prop Design are connected in an intimate way that has allowed me to consider new design solutions for projects in both industries. With props I can tell a story not only through an object’s design, but in its detail & finish. Portraying something as old or new, used or unused, loved or neglected - I can give a glimpse into the world in which a prop inhabits. Through my skills as an Industrial Designer, I can design in a way that not only tells a story but also implies functionality and utility. Beyond just “in universe” designs, being an Industrial Designer has also allowed me to see the practicalities of how to design a prop, not only for fabrication purposes, but for reliability, reparability, and intuitive use for both actors and crew members
